Presentation transcript:

Chicago Tylenol murders Kiyan Dungee , Tim Divers

What Happened? The Chicago Tylenol murders were a series of poisoning deaths resulting from drug tampering. Someone put poison inside of Tylenol pills and placed the bottles back on the shelf. This resulted into seven deaths of random people who thought they were just getting pain pills.

What is cyanide? How did the poisoning happen? A salt or ester of hydrocyanic acid, containing the anion CN− or the group —CN. The salts are generally extremely toxic. •sodium or potassium cyanide used as a poison or in the extraction of gold and silver. There are a few rumors that someone collected a couple Tylenol bottle, infected them with the cyanide and placed them back in random stores in Chicago.

Who were the victims First was 12 year old Mary Kellerman Next was a man named Adam Janus who was 27 After the death of Adam his brother Stanley Janus died age 25 along with his wife Theresa Janus age 19 Fifth was a 31 year old lady named Mary McFarland who took one Tylenol for an headache Sixth was Paula Prince at age 35 this was the oldest victim And last but not least was Mary Reiner who came to a tragic death at age 27

Who were the suspects? The first suspect was Ted Kaczynski , but he was soon cleared by the police. The second suspect was James W. Lewis He was soon moved to be the prime suspect of the case He wrote an extortion letter to the Johnson & Johnson Co. they makers of Tylenol, saying if they paid him one million dollars that could “stop the killing” He served 13 years in prison for the letter but never got charged for the Tylenol murders.

What evidence did the police have? They didn’t have any evidence far as who the Tylenol killer is. The only thing they had were a few reports of the deaths. And they eventually found the cause of the victims death but it was enough to close the case, it is still open till this day.

Why was no one ever charged? There wasn’t enough evidence to find the actual person for all we know James Lewis probably really didn’t do it.

Did it happen anywhere else? Yes there were some people that died in New York and various other places

Summary This was a tragedy and an ironic way to die, these people were buying medicine for themselves and family to get better but instead they only got worse. Who ever did this knew exactly what the outcome would be because they chose to put it inside Tylenol capsules knowing random people would purchase that product. This case is unique due to the changes made after the case was closed. This incident made drug manufactures change the way the package and sell over the counter drugs. Not to mention they never found the suspect they had two men that they thought did it but they didn’t have enough evidence to pin it on someone. This was the most a cruel and cowardly way to kill a group people , putting poison inside medicine pills! - Chicago Tylenol Murders -
