Rape in Nigeria: the silent epidemic among adolescents living with HIV Symposium on Gender Equity and Global Reproductive Health Brandon Brown Director of GHREAT UC Irvine Program in Public Health Morenike Folayan Rolake Odetoyinbo Abigail Harrison Adolescents Living with HIV Health Project-Nigeria

Background Reported prevalence of sexual violence 15 to 40% in sub-Saharan Africa Normalization 2012 National HIV/AIDS survey in Nigeria beating your wife is justified (50% of men and women) if she refuses sex Adolescents worldwide face a fast growing epidemic of sexual violence Little is known about the experiences of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) with forced sex (rape)

Unpublished facts

Cross Sectional Look National survey to identify issues of forced sex 1555 HIV pos/neg adolescents 10 – 19 years 12 states in Nigeria-HIV trtx sites and public places face to face interviewer administered questionnaire Parental consent but not present for responses Average age of sexual debut=14.8 years Girls earlier age than boys (p=0.001) Twelve (5.7%) sexually active males and 69 (31.4%) females reported forced sex More females forced sex at sexual debut (p <0.001) Significantly more female ALHIV had experienced forced sex when compared to female adolescents who reported being HIV negative (p <0.01)

Attention Needed-ALHIV protection Significantly more female ALHIV experienced forced sex compared to HIV negative peers The issue of rape in Nigeria – its prevention and how to mitigate the risk of HIV infection following rape reports – needs attention Rape may contribute to the increased incidence of HIV infection in female adolescents 32% prevalence of rape=epidemic, and we must work to educate the public Rape victims have access to PEP, but uptake is low due to stigma in reporting and poor awareness 6 of 559 who reported rape completed PEP MediaConcern Government getting more involved
