Modeling and Equation Solving 1.1 Day 2 Modeling and Equation Solving

The Zero Factor Property A product of real numbers is zero if and only if at least one of the factors in the product is zero. If a·b = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0.

Solve by Factoring. x2 – 5x + 6 = 0 (x – 3)(x – 2) = 0 x = 3 or x = 2 6x3 – 11x2 – 10x = 0 x(6x2 – 11x – 10) = 0 x(2x – 5)(3x + 2) = 0 x = 0 or x = 5/2 or x = -2/3

Solve Algebraically. Check your answer either algebraically or graphically.

Solve Graphically.

Application The engineers at an auto manufacturer pay students $0.08 per mile plus $25 to road test their new vehicles. Let p = pay and m = number of miles driven Model the problem with an equation. p = 25 + .08m How much did the auto manufacturer pay Sally to drive 440 miles in one day? John earned $93 test-driving a new car in one day. How far did he drive?
