Periodic Table

Warm Up As an introduction to the periodic table, describe how YOU believe the periodic table is arranged

Warm Up for Wednesday, March 5 How did Dobereiner arrange/create the periodic table? How did Mendeleev arrange the periodic table? What was Mosley famous for? Please complete pre-assessment and turn into bin!

Warm Up-Please complete the pre-assessment (name at top!) What is the law that states the properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers? What are the elements -to the left of the stair case -on the staircase -to the right of the stair case Who are the scientists that helped create the periodic table?

Warm-Up: Turn in your lab report! 1. Label each characteristic as belonging to Metals, Nonmetals, or Metalloids. a. Not shiny (dull) b.__________ With one exception, all are solids at room temperature. c.__________ Many are gases at room temperature. d.__________ Tend to gain electrons. e.__________ Tend to lose electrons. 2. How many energy levels are needed to hold the electrons for these elements? a. Carbon: ____ b. Barium: ____ c. Aluminum: _____ 3. How many valence electrons do these elements have? Also tell the oxidation number a. Mg: ____ _____ b. C: ____ ____ c. O: ____ ____ d. Te: ____ _____

Ticket Out Which atom is larger? Why? Ba or Mg? Na or S? S, Se, Cl or Br?

Warm Up for Friday, Oct. 4 What element has an electron configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p2 ? What category of elements does an element belong with poor conductor of electricity? What category includes the majority of elements? What is the name given to Group 8A?

On the test and when finished… On your scantron: Name: Subject: Periodic Table Date: 10/4/2013 Period: When you are finished, please do vocabulary for Ch. 8 and 9 (doing this vocab. Will greatly help you for this next unit!)

Ticket Out What is the family name for: Group 1 Group 2 Group 18 What is the name of the elements with atomic numbers 58-71?

Warm Up What are positive and negative ions called? What are the most And least reactive Nonmetal on the periodic table?

Ticket Out Which has a larger ionic radius: P3- or S2- What type of ion do metals form?

Warm Up Which is larger? Why? The atom O or its ion? The atom B or its ion?

Warm Up Which has a larger atomic radius? Which is larger? Why? K or S? Li or Fr? Rb, Ca, P, or Ne? Which is larger? Why? The atom O or its ion? The atom B or its ion? Which has a greater electronegativity? Cl or I? P or Mg?

Warm Up Which has a greater electronegativity? Cl or I? P or Mg? Rb, Ca, P, or Ne?
