Advocacy Skill Building Workshop Session 2: Audience, Resources, and Tone

Why Are We Here? What Are We Going To Do? How to be effective advocates Today, we’re going to learn about: Audience Resources Tone Draft our group letter Image description: A young woman sits at a table writing. Icebreaker Image description: a group of youth stand in a circle with their arms around each other’s shoulders.

Review Workshop Guidelines Being persuasive is… Persuasive writing Personal testimony Group advocacy issue Image descriptions: In the first picture, a young man is speaking into a microphone at a conference. In the second picture, a young man is putting a letter into a mail box.

Activity: What and Because Image description: A group of youth at a conference are sitting at a table. Some of them are raising their hands to be called on.

Figuring Out Our Audience the decision makers we need to contact about an issue Image description: a group of people are listening to someone outside of the picture give a presentation.

Figuring Out Our Resources people or groups that can help us gather information about an issue or help us advocate Image description: two young men are doing research on a computer. One of them is seated at the computer using the mouse, the other is looking on.

Examples of Tone Happy Sad Angry Frustrated Confused Confident Uncaring Defensive Mean Polite Rude Image descriptions: There are three pictures of people’s faces showing different tones, or using their body language and facial expressions to convey tone. In the first picture, a man is making a serious face that could look angry, or he could be deep in thought. In the second picture, a person is excited, with their eyes wide and a big smile on their face. In the third picture, a woman looks surprised.
