IT MATTERS BECAUSE… Rivalry between Britain and France led to war for control of North America French and Indian War The war cause the conflict between Britain and the colonies American Revolution

North America in 1750

Rivalry: British vs. French British and French compete for power in America. Both want to control the Ohio Valley (had many resources) French had fur trade business ($) with Native Americans of that region

French built forts to protect their land The Ohio Valley French built forts to protect their land British also built forts French seized American fort built their own fort “Fort Duquesne” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mphUZDdMpZA

Native American Allies French and British sought Native American allies. Native American trusted the French, more than they did the British.

As you read, Native American Alliances (pg As you read, Native American Alliances (pg. 108-109) identify examples of the relations between the Natives, French, and British. Activity Why do you think the Native Americans had a better relationship with the French?

Iroquois Confederacy To fight the French and their Native American allies—the British set a treaty with the Iroquois. Iroquois Confederacy —a group of Native American nations under one government

Albany Plan of Union Ben Franklin and representatives from seven colonies meet at the Albany Congress (New York, June 1754) Albany Congress  Iroquois refused an alliance (partnership) with the British, but promised to remain neutral in the conflict.

Ben Franklin—asked the colonists to come together and work to fight the French as a “united colonial government.” To form such a government, each colony had to give up some rights—the colonists REFUSED! The Albany Congress FAILS to UNIFY the colonies.

Activity Answer the following in complete sentences: America’s first political cartoon drawn by Benjamin Franklin in 1754, promoted his Albany Plan of Union. (Cut apart, the snake would die. If the pieces were to unite, the snake would survive.)  (The are the first letters of different colonies.) Answer the following in complete sentences: Is this a primary or secondary source, why? What does each section represent? Which group of colonies are combined into one section? What warning does the cartoon shows about the approaching war with France?

French and Indian War French were successful early in the war, but then the British win victories. William Pitt (1757)-becomes Prime Minister of Britain and sends more troops to colonies.

Activity: French and Indian War Timeline Read pg. 108 -110 Complete the following timeline. Identify the years missing Carefully explain each event

Bell Ringer: Before and After the French & Indian War After the War Contrast: Identify two differences between the two maps. Before the War

Great Britain  got all French lands EAST of the Mississippi River, land in Canada, and GETS FLORIDA! 1763  Treaty of Paris France  lost Canada and land EAST of the Mississippi River. Spain got all French lands WEST of the Mississippi River (Louisiana, New Orleans),but LOST Florida to Britain.

Effects of the War on the American Colonials 1. It united them against a common enemy for the first time. 2. It created bitter feelings towards the British that would only intensify.

Before You Go… List two key ideas from the lesson and explain why they are important.
