Presentation transcript:

So let’s review what we already know So let’s review what we already know. The writing process has 5 stages and starts with brainstorming, which is thinking of ideas to write about. From there writers draft their pieces, revise them to make them better, edit to be sure all spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct and finally publish so others can read their work.   (during this time each part of the writing process should appear separately so they can be explained)

A common mistake is to write without thinking about the many details which make the story better and exciting

Ok so here are the steps that should be taken to brainstorm ideas for a good personal narrative This brainstorm will be based on an important person in your life First you will think of an important person in your life Under that person's name you will list at least three strong memories that you have with that person Then you will choose one of those memories, play it in your mind like a movie and write it out as it happen

Got a mini bike from my godfather The bike was a Honda z50 bright red Invited my cousin and friends over to ride my mini bike. Lost control of the mini bike Rode the mini bike into my neighbor's car My friends were shocked My friends laughed I told my mother My mother told me to tell Mr. Robinson I told Mr. Robinson THIS REQUIRES A THINK ALOUD OF YOU REMEMBERING THE MEMORY WITH MR. ROBINSON. SO THE FIRST THING I NEED TO DO IS LIST OUT MY MEMORY WITH MR. ROBINSON ABOUT MY MINI-BIKE ACCIDENT. THIS IS MY PLAN SO I AM GOING TO STICK TO THE ACTION. FIRST I GOT THE MINIBIKE FORM MY GODFATEHR AND IT WAS A HONDA Z50 IN BRIGHT RED! Then I invited my cousin and friends over to ride my mini bike, after that I lost control of the mini bike, Then I rode the mini bike into my neighbor’s car, my friends were shocked, then my friends laughed, I told my mother, then she told me to tell Mr. Robinson, and I told Mr. Robinson

Got a mini bike from my godfather The bike was a Honda z50 bright red Invited my cousin and friends over to ride my mini bike Lost control of the mini bike Rode the mini bike into my neighbor's car My friends were shocked My friends laughed I told my mother My mother told me to tell Mr. Robinson I told Mr. Robinson CUE TIMELINE FORM LAST SLIDE REREAD NOTICING THAT SOME OF YOUR ENTRIES ON THE TIMELINE ARE NOT ACTIONS AND CAN BE DETAILS YOU USE WHEN YOU DRAFT BUT DON’T NEED TO BE ON HERE. CUE THE DELETION OF ENTRIES ON TIMELINE AS YOU THINK ALOUD I can take out the bike was a Honda z50 and it was bright red…that doesn’t move the story along I can take out my friends were shocked because this story isn’t about them I can also take out my friends laughed because it does not move the story along

Got a mini bike from my godfather Invited my cousin and friends over to ride my mini bike in my neighborhood Lost control of the mini bike Rode the mini bike into my neighbor's car My mother told me to tell Mr. Robinson I told Mr. Robinson Ok so now I have my timeline with things that I thought needed to be taken out, but now I have to ask myself if I forgot something Well I did forget to say I forgot the mini bike was in gear, this is important because it sets up what happened next I also forgot to add that my mother grounded me, this adds to my mood at the time I need to include that Mr. Robinson said that he appreciated that I told him, because it sets up the most important part I forgot to add that he called me a man, that is the point to the whole story

It was my first day with my new mini bike that my god father gave me It was my first day with my new mini bike that my god father gave me. My cousin and I were having fun riding the little motorcycle up and down the street. I was afraid of it at first, but as I rode more I became more confident. I was being cocky and forgot that I had put the bike in gear when I let go of the clutch to rest. The bike popped a wheelie with me holding on for dear life. I didn’t see anything until the last minute, then WHAM! I rode the bike into the side of Mr. Robinson’s new car. I looked at his car and felt bad for what I did. As I scraped myself off of the ground I knew I was in for it. I told my mother what had happened and she made me put the bike away. I was not allowed to ride it for a month. . LearnZillion Notes: --Use this slide (and copy it if you need to) to finish your Core Lesson content if necessary.

Then she made me do something even worse…she made me tell Mr. Robinson Then she made me do something even worse…she made me tell Mr. Robinson. I knew he was going to explode. I crept up to his door and knocked, praying he wasn’t home, but I knew he was. He came to the door smiling and greeted me. From that point on everything went into slow motion. I could not hear myself tell him what I had done, but from his reaction I knew that I had told him. After he got over the initial shock, he put his hand on my shoulder and said “thank you for telling me, it takes a real man to admit his mistakes.” I didn’t know what to say, I felt bad for what I had done, but I also felt proud that Mr. Robinson called me a man.

First List the events of your story on a timeline Second eliminate parts of the story that are not important to the story Third add in parts that may be missing that are important by writing in events on the timeline, and use them in your draft

In this lesson you will learn how to improve your personal narrative by using a timeline to remember important details.

List the events of your story along a time line. Ok it’s your turn….. List the events of your story along a time line. LearnZillion Notes: --The “Guided Practice” should include an example that targets the skill that was used in the Core Lesson. Use the same vocabulary and process you used in the original lesson.

Eliminate parts of the story that are not important to the story Step 2 Eliminate parts of the story that are not important to the story Step 3…….. Put in important events of your story on the timeline, and use them to create your rough draft. LearnZillion Notes: --You’ll probably want more than one Guided Practice slide. If not, just delete this!

LearnZillion Notes: --On the Extension Activities slide(s) you should describe 2-3 activities written with students as the audience (not teachers). Each extension activity should push the students a bit further with the lesson but in a different application or context. Each activity should be designed to take roughly 20-40 minutes. Teachers will likely display the slide in class and then assign an activity to a student or group for additional practice and differentiation. Ideally, these Extension Activities will be created such that a teacher can differentiate instruction by giving more difficult extension activities to students who have shown mastery of the lesson, and less difficult activities to students who are not yet proficient. --If you need more than one slide to list your extension activities, feel free to copy and paste this slide!

LearnZillion Notes: --”Quick Quiz” is an easy way to check for student understanding at the end of a lesson. On this slide, you’ll include a way for teachers to quickly and authentically assess student understanding. That’s it! You won’t be recording a video of this slide and when teachers download the slides, they’ll direct their students through the example on their own so you don’t need to show an answer to the question.
