Imaging Violence & Nonviolence Nan Goldin - The Ballad of Sexual Dependency Defining concepts of violence and Nonviolence. Analyzing violent world views Examining non-violent resistance Media Theory Cinematic Language Analytical approaches understanding art Image Creation Technical instruction Imaging Violence & Nonviolence How to engage students in the creation of a Fambul Tok (Family Talk)

Weeks 1-3: Recognizing Violence Introduction to key topics: Possible learning activities: Responses to readings through images, journaling contact with cultural violence. PAT KIM What is violence and nonviolence. How is violence and nonviolence represented in images.

Weeks 4-8: Depth Who are we really? Is violence normal? What do we see, how can we analyze what we are fed visually? Possible learning activities: reading/film responses and analysis. Creation of found footage propaganda with subversive meanings. PAT KIM Views on human nature, psychological explanations. Introduction to technical aspects of video making, historical context – propaganda, adverts, consumption of violence in media.

Key Collaborative Class Recognizing the potential for peacebuilding. Analysis of Fambul Tok and discussion of community driven forgiveness/reconciliation.

Towards Resistance Manufacturing consent/Creating Dissent Working out a plan for a final project (possibly public). PAT KIM How is consent manufactured? The need for a nonviolent world view, evaluating potential for nonviolent resistance Examples of resistance through interactive media Technical instruction

Final Project Considerations Making a contemporary, student driven version of Fambul Tok (community based forms of healing), using media and technology…. Possible Learning Activities: In depth analysis of resistance, student driven content, constructive feedback sessions and development of a public project/exhibit/fill in the blank. PAT KIM Further analysis of the resistance to violence in society. Creation of a media based project (to be developed with students).
