French and Indian War Background: With Spain no longer a major threat, France emerged as the greatest rival to Great Britain By 1756, France and Britain had built huge empires in North America and were competing to become the strongest world power.

Causes of The French and Indian War The War broke out over the Ohio River valley (known for the rich resource of fur). Being initially fought far from Georgia’s borders, it had little impact on the state.

Basic Stats Began in 1754 It lasted nine years Part of a larger worldwide war known as the Seven Years War Led to the American Revolution (Am. Rev.)

Fear that one country would gain more power than the others The War Was Fueled by …. Greed Fear Fear that one country would gain more power than the others The hope to capture the most land in the new world and control its resources

How do they match up? Strong Army France Britain Strong Army Allies: Western tribes (Algonquin Indians) and Spain More experienced military leaders Did NOT argue among themselves (got along) Strong navy Allies: SIX Iroquois tribe and American Colonies Larger population

Territories Disputed

And the Winner is… Britain defeated France and her Allies by 1763. Outcome of War: France gave up all of its North American Colonies Spain was forced to give La Florida to Britain, but they were granted most of the French territory west of the Mississippi River

Change of Territories BEFORE 1763 AFTER 1763

How this affected Georgia… Georgia’s border expanded: South to St. Mary’s River West to Mississippi River North to land around Augusta
