Other Cell Cycle Definitions

What is the Cell Cycle? A series of events that take place in a cell as it grows and divides. INTERPHASE MITOSIS CYTOKENESIS PROPHASE METAPHASE ANAPHASE TELOPHASE

What is the role of the Nucleus? It contains the cell’s DNA, which makes up the chromosomes.

What is the role of DNA? Contains info that determines the traits that an organism inherits. It contains instructions for growth and development.

What is the role of Chromatin? During INTERPHASE, chromosomes appear as Chromatin that makes up the DNA and protein for the cell. Found in the Nucleus. NUCLEUS

When condensed, what does the Chromatin become? Condense means to “thicken.” When the Mitosis stage of the cell cycle begins Chromatin condenses and becomes single chromosomes of DNA.

Before a chromosome is duplicated, it is a single chromosome called a? CHROMATID!! One-half of the 2 identical copies of a replicated chromosome.

After a chromosome is duplicated, What are they known as After a chromosome is duplicated, What are they known as? And what holds the two “sisters” together? SISTER CHROMATIDS!! When the 2 chromatids become “sisters,” they are held together by a CENTROMERE!!

What is the role of the Telomeres? Telomeres “cap” the ends of the chromosomes for protection and keeps chromosomes from sticking together during and after Cell Division.

The Centrioles have a VERY important role to play! What is it? They come in 2’s & move to opposite ends of the cell during division. Found near the nucleus where they duplicate themselves during Interphase & can only be seen when the cell is getting ready to divide.

The Centrioles have BIG “Helpers” during Cell Divison The Centrioles have BIG “Helpers” during Cell Divison. What are the “Helpers” and what is their role? SPINDLE FIBERS!! Centrioles “sprout” spindle fibers and attach to the centromere that holds the sister chromatids together. The Centrioles use the Spindle Fibers to pull sister chromatids apart and moves them to opposite sides of the cell.
