Cell Cycle: The life cycle of a cell!

KEY CONCEPT Cells have distinct phases of growth, reproduction, and normal functions.

The cell cycle has three main stages. Interphase Mitosis Cytokinesis

Interphase: The Basics! Cells spend the majority of their cell cycle in interphase. The purpose of interphase is for cell growth and for the cell to do it’s job. By the end of interphase a cell has two full sets of DNA (chromosomes) and is large enough to begin the division process.

3 parts of Interphase: Gap 1 (G1): cell growth and normal functions DNA synthesis (S): copies DNA Gap 2 (G2): additional growth

Why do we need mitosis and cytokinesis? Growth Development Replace worn out cells. Repair tissue (cuts, bruises, broken bones, etc.)

Mitosis The purpose of mitosis is to make an identical nucleus Why? -Every cell needs an instruction manual to do it’s job. -The nucleus has DNA which is the instruction manual for all cell functions (jobs).

Mitosis has 4 phases Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase I like to remember the steps with…..PMAT!

Cytokinesis Cytokinesis is the splitting of the cytoplasm. The result is two new cells. https://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=f-ldPgEfAHI

Exit Ticket: Cell Cycle What are the phases of the cell cycle? What is the purpose of Interphase? What is the purpose of Mitosis? What are the steps of Mitosis? What is the purpose of Cytokinesis? As a whole, why do we need to make more cells?
