Social Behavior in Animals Sociobiology

Match the Animal With Its Group Name Buffalo Sheep Whales Herd Flock Pod

Match the Animal With Its Group Name Sea Gulls Wolves Lions Flock Pack Pride

Match the Animal With Its Group Name Quail Covey

Others include… Bees = Swarm Fish = School Geese = Gaggle Crows = Murder Hens = Brood Baby Birds = Clutch Termites and Ants = Colony

Social groupings depend on animal signals – they remain together and do things together by influencing one another. Some animals may be grouped, but do not exhibit social behavior: Moths – attracted to light (use moon for navigation) Barnacles – attach to a pier or rock substrate Trout – gather in a cool pool of water

Why Live Together?? Defense from predators – more eyes; more strength Ex. Musk oxen circle, gull colonies, prairie dog towns Reproduction – easier to find opposite sex and synchronize reproduction behaviors Parental Care – help from kin; Altruistic behavior

Why Live Together?? Hunting – carnivores Huddle in severe weather Division of labor and more efficiency Insects; naked mole rats Better for learning and passing on helpful info

Why Be the Lone Wolf?? Be camouflaged and spread out – hard to find More food for yourself Limited resources – depends on ecological conditions
