RDA-CODATA IG on Legal Interoperability of Data Activities to date: Formed in March 2013 and met at each RDA plenary Selected and developed 8 case studies: 1. CLARIN ERIC (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure; European Research Infrastructure Consortium) 2. iMarine Data e-Infrastructure Initiative for Fisheries Management and Conservation of Marine Living Resources http://www.i-marine.eu 3. All-Island Research Observatory (AIRO), Ireland 4. Digital Repository of Ireland 5. Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC) Traditional Knowledge Atlases and Data Management, Canada 6. Coordination of Research e-infrastructure Activities Toward an International Virtual Environment for Biodiversity (CReATIVE-B) 7. Plazi treatment repository 8. Climate data (GEO focus)

RDA-CODATA IG on Legal Interoperability of Data The purpose of the Case Studies is to: Provide more specific information on “best” (good) practices, as well as barriers and constraints in a number of different scientific domains and communities of practice (lessons learned); Illustrate the variety of legal frameworks that govern research data, different approaches to intellectual property and copyright across jurisdictions, different disciplinary expectations and norms, and alternative mechanisms to address the Legal Interoperability of Research Data that have been tried in practice; and Identify opportunities for cross-disciplinary, cross-domain fertilization and collaboration and for new initiatives to address key barriers and constraints.

RDA-CODATA IG on Legal Interoperability of Data At RDA P4: Breakout 1, Monday afternoon, we will review status of case study development, look at similarities and differences, and plan completion prior to RDA P5. Breakout 2, Tuesday morning, we will begin discussion of developing international Principles for Legal Interoperability of Research Data, and plan October 21 workshop on this topic at NAS in Washington, DC. Goal is to finish both the case studies and Principles by RDA P5, and publish both later in 2015. We will be working with new Brokering IG at P4.
