Right Here, Right Now August 27

Think about it … Who is a neighbor you’re glad you’ve gotten to know? Some people go overseas with the message of the Gospel We support them and pray for them But for us, we don’t have to go far to share our transformed life in Christ

Listen for evil manifested. Mark 5:1-7 (NIV) They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet.

Listen for evil manifested. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!

Broken People in a Broken World Where did the events of this story take place? https://www.ccel.org/bible/phillips/CN160-TRAVELS.htm

Broken People in a Broken World How had the townspeople coped with the demon-possessed man Jesus met? What would be other effects of evil in people’s lives today that might not be observable but be just as real? What things in this scene would have been repulsive to the Jews?

Broken People in a Broken World What are some ways we typically react when we encounter brokenness? So, why do you think Jesus came here?

Listen for how Jesus responded. Mark 5:8-15 (NIV) For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!" 9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.

Listen for how Jesus responded. 12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake

Listen for how Jesus responded. and were drowned. 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Jesus Restores a Life How did Jesus demonstrate that He was in control? What does this confrontation say about how the demons viewed Jesus? Why do you think Jesus allowed the many evil spirits to go into the pigs?

Our attitudes or actions Jesus’ attitudes and actions Jesus Restores a Life Contrast Jesus’ treatment of the man in this story with attitudes we might have towards such a person? When the people learned what had happened to the man and came to see for themselves, just what did they see? When have you observed a dramatic transformation in someone’s life? Our attitudes or actions Jesus’ attitudes and actions

Listen for Jesus’ task for the man. Mark 5:18-20 (NIV) As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Participate in Christ’s Mission Why do you suppose the man wanted to go with Jesus and the disciples when they were leaving in their boat? How did Jesus answer him? How did the man respond to Jesus’ instructions? How can you use your story of transformation to share the gospel?

Participate in Christ’s Mission Why would the man in our story have such a significant impact on his home town? Why is it important to be a light right where you live? How can our group engage the brokenness in our community?

Application Write. Write down the names of three people in your life who are far from God. Ask God for an opportunity to have a spiritual conversation with them.

Application Walk. Walk across your street, hop over your fence, or knock on the cubicle next to you. Start a spiritual conversation with them and ask God to guide your words and the conversation.

Application Research. We can respond with grace and intelligence to the skeptic’s questions. Launch your study with a book like Jeremiah Johnston’s Unanswered or Holman QuickSource Guide to Christian Apologetics.
