Behavior Management and Organization America Counts

Your VERY first session: Walk in with intention! Share your story and ask questions about theirs. Do NOT be surprised if the kids are not too talkative. It takes some time to establish a relationship and routine. Use an ice breaker if conversation is not going well. Learn the students’ names; pronounce them correctly.

First Session… Take a personal interest in the student. If they like Pokémon- go home and find out more about it, EVEN if you think it’s ridiculous. Come back with questions and comments about it. Use eye contact and an enthusiastic, but real voice These kids will smell a phony a mile away. HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND MAKE THEM BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES

Just Remember: Turn to the person next to you and practice…. Behavior Management: First Impressions Are Extremely Important -Be professional and friendly, and remember to remind the kids that you are there to help them and that literally no question they may ask is stupid or silly. Everyone Learns Differently and Each Person is Unique -Students process information in different ways. Some learners are reflective; they need time to mentally digest new information; others are active – they like to learn by doing things. Stick to a Routine, but Be Flexible -Establish a routine together and check off tasks as you accomplish each. Turn to the person next to you and practice….

Behavior Management – Your Key To Success Discuss Expectations for Each Other and Create a Contract

Behavior Management – Your Key To Success Discuss Expectations for Each Other and Create a Contract SOME IDEAS Be on time, prepared with your materials and ready to learn/tutor Participate and ask questions Keep a positive attitude, even when you are frustrated or tired Always try and ask for help when you need it Use appropriate language at all times Speak with respect

What happens when things don’t go well?

*Sign the agenda each day that it is completed Organization: Agenda- Start every session with an agenda check and “How was your day?” check in. (5-10 min) *Sign the agenda each day that it is completed *Four signatures = reward at the end of the week * If agenda is missing/unused, remind the student of its importance *Make sure backpack is organized *Adjust if not using so that students can find success quickly.

Take Home Folder- check each session (5-10 min) *One side for homework completed and needs to be turned in and any papers parents need to sign. *Other side for papers that need to be put into binders, study sheets. Lesson Plan concept/lesson review model, guide and independent practice Have a Lesson Plan for Each Session *A lesson plan lets you be honest with the tutee. Without an plan, both tutor and tutee may have unreal expectations and feel discouraged after a session.

Why set an Lesson Plan? *Helps you to break down a task into manageable pieces for the tutee. *Smaller tasks are less likely to overwhelm the tutee, and are much easier to accomplish and learn. * It helps the tutor and tutee determine what will be covered, and how, in a logical rather than random progression. *A plan models good student behavior. *Your tutee will also learn from your actions and vocabulary. *With any luck, your tutee will pick up a few good habits from you.

First Week Ideas: Get to know you activity Establish rules and expectations- review BGC rules and set up expectations Write a contract-come up with rewards/consequences together 4. Map out day for locker breaks 5. Color code schedule with times when student should go to locker 6. Set up Take Home Folder 7. Practice using a lock; work on memorizing combination and schedule

HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS MAKE EVERY STUDENT BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES!
