Welcome to Cub Scouts Welcome everyone and thank them for coming out Introduce yourself and others there to help you Be sure to publicly thank the school for their support in allowing the meeting to take place

A FAMILY program for boys in grades 1-5 What is Cub Scouting? What is Cub Scouts? It is a FAMILY based program for boys in grades 1-5

What do parents want? Ask the group “What do parents want?” “What are you looking for in an activity for your son to be involved in?” Don’t seek answers, you have answers on next slide

Help their son develop Help their son be successful and gain self-esteem Help their son meet new friends Have their family values reinforced Help their son master new skills And of course to have: These are the things we hope parents want and Cub Scouting provides List the above things Fun!!!

Ask the question “What do you boys want?” What do boys want?

“FUN!!!!!!” “That’s right! Boys want to have FUN! “That’s all the things we talked to them at school about and we will talk about those more in a little bit”

Cub Scouting is: …..Character Building …Citizenship Training …Personal Fitness And “Cub Scouting is all of these things.” “It is Character building, citizenship training, personal fitness” “But most important of all, its FUN!!!” fun

Cub Scouts have: …Meetings …Activities …Advancements And fun “What do Cub Scouts do?” “Cub Scouts have meetings, they go to activities, they earn advancements. . .” “But most of all, they have FUN!!!” fun

…Meetings: Activities…Games…Crafts Pack meetings —meet once a month Den meetings —up to 10 boys (usually by grade and meet Once a week or twice a month) Activities…Games…Crafts Pack meetings —meet once a month Dens are groups of boys in the same grade (1st-5th), usually up to 10 boys in a den Dens normally meet weekly or twice a month During these den meetings, the boys do different activities, play games, and make crafts Pack meetings, which is when all the dens come together to meet as a group, happen once a month. This is the meeting where all the dens show off all the cool stuff they have been doing during the month and the boys receive recognition for all the advancements they have earned.

…Activities: Cub and Family camping, Day Camp, Pinewood Derbies, Resident Camps, Field Trips, and much, much more… Cub Scouts take part in several activities throughout the year. Unlike sports, which run in seasons, Cub Scouting is year round. We have several family camping opportunities throughout the year We have Day Camps and Resident Camps during the summer Pinewood Derbies are always a hit! The scouts have the chance to build their own race car and see how fast they are compared to Scouts in their Pack, District, and even Council. Packs and Dens may line up different field trips for the Scouts during the year as well

Bobcat (all new boys start at Bobcat) Advancements Bobcat (all new boys start at Bobcat) The Cub Scout advancement program is how a boy receives recognition for all his efforts and achievements. All Cub Scouts start of by earning their Bobcat rank. This rank teaches the Scout the building blocks for his Cub Scout adventure. After earning the Bobcat rank, the Scout begins work on the rank appropriate for his age. First grade – Tiger Badge, Second Grade – Wolf Badge, Third grade – Bear Badge, and Fourth-Fifth Grade – Webelos Badge. The highest rank a Cub Scout can earn is the Arrow of Light. It is like the Eagle Scout rank of Cub Scouting.

All 1st Graders join a Tiger Cub Den--- Tiger Cubs all have an adult who serves as the Tiger’s partner How many of you are 1st graders? You guys will all be Tiger Cubs this year. It is required that an adult be with all Tiger Cubs at all the activities.

Your son is part of a pack and a den The way Scouting is set up is like this: The Chartered Organization owns the Pack. The CO for this Pack is ________ The Chartered Organization Representative is a volunteer who represents the Pack to the organization. The Pack Committee is a group of leaders who administer and help support the Pack The Cubmaster leads the Pack and aids the Den Leaders. They also run the monthly Pack meetings. The Den Leaders and Asst. Den Leaders work directly with your son. The whole group is supported by the District Committee and the staff of the Louisiana Purchase Council. Which is supported by our district committee And commissioner staff as well as the Louisiana Purchase Council

Support: Monthly Roundtables Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide All Training is available online and in Group settings Boys’ Life magazine Commissioner Service There is abundant support available for Cub Scout Leaders and parents. We have monthly district roundtable meetings where leaders come together and share ideas, network, and discuss upcoming month’s theme. There are Den and Pack Resource guides available to help with running meetings All the training needed is available online and in group settings Boys Life magazine is available for those who choose. Your unit also has the support of a district and council commissioner staff. Those folks are experienced Scouters who are available to help as well.

Costs Registration Boys’ Life Handbook Uniform Dues – Only if your pack collets them (much of this can be paid for through Product Sales) Family Friends of Scouting Now you’re probably saying what does all this cost? Registration to be a scout or leader is only $25 per year. This includes accident insurance to cover all those who are registered while at Scouting activities. However, we will only be collecting the prorated amount to get you through the end of this year. For you all, it will be $____. Boys Life magazine comes to your house once a month. Something to look forward to instead of the waves of bills most of us get. The cost of a one year subscription is only $12. But like with the registration fee, we will only be collecting $___ which will get you through the calendar year. Handbooks are available for purchase tonight. They are $10. Uniforms can be purchased at our Scout Shop on Oliver Road in Monroe, or online at www.scoutstuff.org Some units collect dues. However, you can sell popcorn which may allow you to offset a great deal of these costs. Look at your Popcorn information and pick out a great prize and start selling! Your unit will also participate in Friends of Scouting. This is your way to support the programs of the Louisiana Purchase Council. Afterall, the money you pay for registration pays your national registration fee. We have to send all that to the National organization.

What’s Next ? What’s next?

WHAT ???? Me a leader?

Why Not? No Time? No Experience? Schedule? Kids drive you nuts? Why can’t you be a leader? Outline the objections most people give.

So why should You ? Now ask “Why should you be a leader?”

For Your Son! These are the key years To help Develop & Influence “I’ll tell you why.” “It’s all for YOUR son. Cub Scouts is a family based program. We have to have parents who will be leaders in order for the program to succeed and for YOUR son to do all the great things he is so looking forward to doing.” “These year’s are the most important and formative years of his life. Don’t you NEED to be a part of this time in his life?” “These years are your chance to influence him and help him and all his friends develop. It is so important for these boys to have a strong foundation as they grow older and become active citizens in our communities.” “If you don’t do it, who is influencing your son now? What activities is his foundation built on?”

Cub Scouting: Helps Strengthen Families, Helps Your son Grow, & You’ll have fun too!! Cub Scouting helps to make families even stronger It helps your son grow in character, citizenship, and physical fitness. And you get to have a lot of FUN along the way!!!

Questions ?

OK!!! Let’s get Started… This is where the registration fees and Boys Life fees are collected and handbooks are sold. Also where needed leaders are recruited.
