Activity 2: Enzymes are specific

Role up! Each person in your group will have a role. Using the list below assign each group member a specific job. 1. Time Keeper 2. Laptop handler 3. Question Manager 4. Speaker

Directions: Read through the following PowerPoint and fill in your guided notes. ***Remember: - EVERY group member is participating - 6 inch voices - EVERY group member is filling out his/her own guided notes packet

Enzymes are picky! If the substrate is not the correct shape, then it will not be able to bind to the enzyme. This means that the reaction would NOT take place.

Open Sesame!! Substrates bind to an enzyme like a key fits into a keyhole to unlock a door. substrate = key enzyme= lock active site= keyhole

Video: How enzymes work? Directions: Watch the video and answer the following questions: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__how_enzymes_work.htm 1. How is an enzyme-substrate complex formed? 2. Where does the substrate bind on the enzyme? 3. Are enzymes reusable or do they break up once the reaction is complete? Support your answer with evidence from the video.

Finished? Create an picture illustrating the process of an enzyme binding to a substrate
