Jesus Film Lesson one Scripture: Luke 1 and 2

The first 8 minutes The Jesus Film was originally made in 1979 The first 8 minutes The Jesus Film was originally made in 1979. The first eight minutes of the current film were added in 2003. This part mirrors major events in the Old Testament that are important to emphasize for historical context before we focus on the New Testament Gospel: Jesus’ birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. It summarizes creation of the earth and the garden of Eden, and refers to the lives of Abraham, Isaac and prophecies of Isaiah

Meaning of some names, titles, and events “Jesus” is the Greek for the Jewish name “Joshua”, which means “God saves”. “Christ” is the Greek word for the Hebrew/Jewish name “Messiah”, which means “the Anointed One”. “Passover”; the Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. Now watch the first 8 minutes of the film

Part One; order of events (scenes in the film) The Jesus Film, 1 hour 54 minutes Part One; order of events (scenes in the film) An angel appears to Mary in her home Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth Soldiers announce that the Roman emperor requires a census Joseph and Mary go to Bethlehem to be counted; Jesus in born there in a stable An angel announces Jesus’ birth to shepherds who then go to see Him Joseph and Mary take Jesus to the temple in nearby Jerusalem where an old man blesses them Joseph and Mary return home (Nazareth) During another visit to Jerusalem years later, Jesus stays three days to listen to rabbis (religious teachers) in the temple. Now watch the first 8 scenes of the film (part 1)

An angel appeared to Mary in her home. Luke 1:30-37 Take your Bibles and gather in small groups to study the following 4 events: An angel appeared to Mary in her home. Luke 1:30-37 What did the angel say? Why was this such a surprise to Mary? When Jesus Christ was born, an angel announced His birth to some shepherds nearby? Luke 2:10-12 Compare this with Isaiah 9:6-7 (written 700 years earlier); whom is Isaiah writing about? A week later Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in nearby Jerusalem. Luke 2:22-35 Whom did they meet there? What did this person do and say? On one occasion during His youth, Jesus’ parents took Him to the temple in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Feast of Passover. Luke 2:41-52 How old was Jesus? What happened at the temple? Was this a common thing for a boy of Jesus’ age to do? What explanation did Jesus give His parents?
