Presentation transcript:

What Why Who Test officially released vegetable varieties and associated technologies in rotation, relay, mixed cropping Vegetables already released by the Tanzanian government AVRDC, HORT CRSP Initiate partnerships with stakeholders especially farmer groups Better ensures relevance with what we should do IITA (TZ) Capacity building in crucial areas (field agents, nutrition) in preparation for participation in the project Need skilled and knowledgeable partners in component technologies Research groups of the specific technologies Extension of animal feeding technologies that lead to rapid fattening or increased milk/meat/egg production Will create a link between the project and the partners District agents

Training farmer groups to produce quality declared (certified) seed Making seed of superior varieties available on time TOSCI, District agents, CG centers involved Building networks/relationships. Alignment of SI technologies with markets Identify market opportunities Regional traders, PPP, IFPRI Communication, technology transfer and outreach strategy (field days, 8-8, seedfairs, on-farm demos, leaflets etc) Reach thousands of people; supporting the project stimulate interest of stakeholders about project outputs National programmes, supported by IITA/local researchers

Identification of potential students (selection and placement of MSc Identification of potential students (selection and placement of MSc. And PhD students) Human capital; sustainable program operations; capacity building Project partners, CRSPs Nutrient enhancing recipes in local languages Already being done by AVRDC, requires scaling out AVRDC Post-harvest technologies for longer and safer storage Increase food supply/safety and improve nutrition Private sector, TFNC, IITA, AVRDC Nutrient dense varieties (eg. Fortified maize varieties, iron-reach mung-bean, protein rich soy bean, vitamin-rich vegetables) Optimization of components of systems intensification. Improve nutrient level of vulnerable groups Project partners especially ICRISAT, ILRI, AVRDC. Linkages with HarvestPlus, Peanut CSRP

Participatory Diagnosis of opportunities for systems intensification; Farmer-identified priorities for SI To identify the best local opportunities for intensifying local systems Outreach partners, farmers and other stakeholders push-pull technique for stem borer control and forage production Can be done together with variety evaluation; integration of livestock and crop ILRI, CIAT, NARS, Identification of networks that support knowledge provision To know who potential partners are locally Project partners, SANREM CRSP; Appropriate and safe soil, water and pest management options for production Co-adapt with farmers available soil, water and pest management technologies to boost current vegetable productivity in a cereal-vegetable-livestock system context AVRDC, CIAT, IITA, ILRI, NARS
