Testing, testing….. 1 2 3

How do we find out the best... …at maths? …author? …apple?

Which are the tastiest baked beans?

What could be different? The beans? The sauce? The brand? So let’s do a taste test to find out…

But does it make a difference if we know what we’re eating? 1. The ‘open’ test The testers know which brand of beans they are eating 2. The ‘blind’ test The testers do NOT know which brand of beans they are eating

Which test is better? Which makes the test more fair? ‘Open’ test ‘Blind’ test Can we make the test even better? A ‘double blind’ test This is when the people running the test don’t know which brand is which either!

Before we start, what were your predictions? Which brand will be most popular in the Open Test Which brand will be most popular in the Blind Test? Will the label make any difference?

So let’s do the tests…. 1. The ‘open’ test 2. The ‘blind’ test Brand labels showing 2. The ‘blind’ test No labels showing

The results What did the Open Test tell us? What did the Blind Test tell us? Did the Blind Test make a difference?

Something for EVERYONE to do… You could test your family at home, or you could ask them to test you What could you use for a blind test ? If you prefer the supermarket brand or you can’t taste the difference you might be able to save money on your shopping!

The results What did the Open Test tell us? What did the Blind Test tell us? What were the results in the classrooms? Did all the surveys agree? Did the Blind Test make a difference?

The results You need to set up and run the taste test scientifically! Look carefully at the items you have been given. How can you set up your test? In your groups decide what you will do Write your plan

Your experiment What were your results? Were they the same as other groups? What might have made the test unfair? How did you make it a fair test?
