Relationships and loss Father and Daughter Relationships and loss Lesson outcomes I can statements

What is going on here? What questions can you ask?

Watch the film. What is the film about? http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=father+and+daughter+animation+film&&view=detail&mid=5A431E2F92D3BB49FB6E5A431E2F92D3BB49FB6E&FORM=VRDGAR What is the film about? Film plot - A father says goodbye to his young daughter and leaves. As the wide Dutch landscapes live through their seasons so the girl lives through hers. She becomes a young woman, has a family and in time she becomes old, yet within her there is always a deep longing for her father. The story can be seen as a metaphor. The father leaving on a boat signifies his death and the images of the daughter watching for him to come back is signifying her always thinking about him throughout her life. Towards the end when the now elderly daughter begins to travel through the overgrown, dried up riverbed is supposed to explain that she has died and is now travelling in the afterlife to see her father once again.

Go back to your sheet of questions What questions do you think father has? What questions does daughter have? What other questions do you have?

Pass your sheet to another table Pick the most important question asked by Father Pick the most important question asked by Daughter

Pass you sheet again How would you answer the question from Father and Daughter?

See handouts: task sheet; evaluation of group work sheet ‘Father and Daughter’ Challenge You have 30 minutes for this group work challenge. Your group is challenged to produce a piece of work that provides evidence that you all understand what makes a good parent/child relationship. By the end of the task you should be able to say that you have met the two lesson outcomes:- I can work in a group I can explain what makes a parent/child relationship Your first task is to assign group roles. You have 2 minutes to do this. Your second task is to decide what format your piece of work will take. Here are some ideas, but you might come up with a better idea in your group. You have one minute to decide on this: A poster/picture showing the qualities of a good parent/child relationship. This can be a mixture of drawing and writing. You could do this as a ‘WANTED’ poster. Write a job advert for a good parent and child. A role-play or drama. A comic strip. A rap, song or poem You will present the challenge work to the rest of the class at the end of the challenge. You will then assess your individual performance and peer assess others. See peer assessment sheet. Can change grade to whatever suits school eg WT, WA, WB. Grade could be for effort as well as meeting the criteria of showing what makes a good parent/child relationship. See handouts: task sheet; evaluation of group work sheet

How could you help a friend who has suffered loss?

Lesson reflection Today I have learnt … Today I have developed my skills in … I want to know more about … Encourage skills to be linked to managing emotions or getting help as well as those relating to team work and presenting.

Finally for a laugh! Lets play a game of gobble, gobble! In pairs, one person thinks of an emotion. They then need to convey that emotion to their pair by using only turkey speech (gobble, gobble) Swap after 30 seconds. Did you guess the emotion?
