Elliott Erwitt

Elliott Erwitt Biography Born on July 26, 1928 In 1939 he and his family immigrated to the USA from France He studied photography and filmmaking at L.A. City College and the New School for Social Research (completed his studies in 1950)

Elliott Erwitt’s Early Life Erwitt served as a photographer's assistant in the 1950's in the United States Army He was stationed in France and Germany where he was influenced by his meeting the famous photographers, Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker. Stryker, the former Director of the Farm Security Administration's photography department, hired Erwitt to work on a photography project for the Standard Oil Company. This was one of his first paid projects. Erwitt then began a freelance photographer career and produced work for Collier's, Look, Life and Holiday magazines. In 1953 he joined the Magnum Photos agency which allowed him to shoot photography projects around the world.
