Warm Up Independently read a passage titled, “Square Deal/Conserving the Wilderness” and answer the following comprehension questions  What did Roosevelt promise the people in 1904? What did the Square Deal call for? How was this different from previous presidencies? Why was Roosevelt known as the first environmental president?

Roosevelt called for his friend and fellow Republican William Howard Taft to run for president. Roosevelt thought that Taft would carry on the progressive Republican agenda. Taft easily gained the Republican nomination, and went on to become president. Can you make a prediction about how Taft’s presidency might go using context clues and inference skills?
