Today’s Agenda Leadership in Milepost Leadership Panel Discussion Mileposts and Teacher Vitae: Administrators Learn from Each Other Current Legislative Actions in Idaho

Engaged Leaders are the Key Take an Active Role Set High Expectations

That must start at the top? Vision? Mission? Purpose? When you roll this out, communicate to your staff about: Why the district chose Mileposts? What the expectation is? What results you hope to see?

*Leadership at each building sets the tone and expectations for staff utilization of Mileposts. *Leaders play a critical role. *Leaders design the plan for training staff, as well as the strategies to embed Mileposts as the vehicle to drive student improvement.

“Real change begins with the simple act of people talking about what they care about.” M.J. Wheatley

Why Should They Care? – Mileposts Benefits For Teachers: easily understand and be able to use meaningful data quicker, organized way to differentiate and personalize instruction help all levels of students grow a world of content & assessment resouces For Students: personalized experience feedback & guidance system learning becomes fun again any digital tablet or pc student begins journey to independent leaning For Administrators: gain insights to drive continuous improvement share effective practices immediately staff-wide lead a student achievement revolution For Parents: unprecedented access guided information and assistance get answers to support your child's educational experience be part of the team again

Conversations change Culture Conversations around the need for change When does this take place? Who needs to be there? What can we do differently? How can we make that happen? Strategies to continue conversations regularly Once the need has been established, conversations need to be generated around the data and those needs. Conversations/brainstorming lead to opening dialogue and thinking out of the box. This can lead to culture change, which can then begin to make changes in structures. What can we do better to help students be more successful? What part does Mileposts play in this?

Provide Team Planning Time Hand out the Planning Guide Have them get into school groups – or can choose to be one large group. Give them a minimum of 20 minutes for planning discussions using the template. Gather back together – spend 10 minutes or so for each group to share.

Build Capacity in Teacher Leaders Find the people who will take iniative Develop experts in each school Encourage teachers to train and be trained Commit resources and time for continued Professional Development and Implementation of Mileposts Set Clear Expectations

Use Critical Conversation Opportunities Staff Meetings Dept/Grade Level Meetings RtI Meetings PLCs Parent/Teacher Conferences Regional Trainings

Successful Integration Plan – short term and long term Train as many staff as possible Set Expectations Initiate Conversations Follow through regularly Make Mileposts a part of ‘doing business’

“Strategic planning is worthless – unless there is first a strategic vision.” John Naisbitt Research, and our own experience, proves that a successful Mileposts™ Initiative comes when Leadership takes an active role in the process, planning, and follow through – and takes training to classroom level teachers. We have all heard the saying: “If we fail to plan, we plan to fail!” So let’s plan!

Action is the KEY! What expectations will you set: Yourself Principals Staff How do you plan to follow up on expectations? What is your follow up schedule? The Action part of the plan is paramount! Without the action – nothing will change.

Setting the Stage Must Believe: Data based decision making will lead to increased student achievement. Must Participate: To demonstrate your belief and staff will see that you personally find and use data. Must Set Expectation: That all of your staff will use the program to make data based decisions. Must Demand: That all decisions about student achievement are based on data and that all staff members can find, manage and create solutions using data.
