CHRISTMAS LOTTERY

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS LOTTERY IN SPAIN It was the 18th December of 1812 in Cádiz. Nowadays, it is celebrated the 22nd December every year.

HOW DOES IT WORK? It is celebrated in Madrid. The biggest prize is called “Gordo” (The fat) with 4 millions euros. The National Lottery is the organizer.

WHY AND WHAT IS THE CHIRSTMAS LOTTERY FOR? The coupons are called “tenths” as every number is divided into ten fractions. It is an old tradition and many people give coupons to others to wish them good luck.

WHO TAKE THE NUMBERS? Students from San Ildefonso school in Madrid have called out the numbers for 200 years. When the biggest prizes come out, they call them several times.

WHICH ARE THE PRIZES? First Prize :20,000 € Second prize:6,250 € Third prize:2,500 € Fourth prize :1000 € Fifth prize:300 € Units (“Pedreas”):5 €

HOW MANY NUMBERS ARE THERE? All the numbers up to five digits. Some people choose their coupons in relation with special dates (birthdays, wedding day...)
