Recent progress of WDC for Geophysics, Beijing Xiukuan Zhao, Baiqi Ning, Lianhuan Hu Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS

Outline Introduction Real-time data Historical data Global cooperation Then I will talk about three aspects enhancing our database to sustain Earth Sciences researchers’ needs.

WDC for Geophysics, Beijing One of the nine discipline data centers in China joined WDC in 1988. Supported by Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS). Two main observation systems Space Environment Exploration System Seismic Array Observation System WDS Regular Membership just Approved The IGGCAS is one of the most important and well-known geosciences research institutions in China. Two main observation systems, Space Environment Exploration System and Seismic Array Observation System, which are the main data sources of WDC for Geophysics, Beijing.

Long-term, continuous observations Earliest ionospheric data in China since 1946 Earliest geomagnetic data in China since 1897 Earliest upper-atmosphere wind observations by Meteor Radar in China since 2002 GPS-TEC & Scintillation data Geomagnetic pulsations data Very high frequency (VHF) Radar data Seismic data Main features We focuses on a continuous observations of earth's space environment for obtaining relevant space environment parameters on the geomagnetic field, electrical field, electron density, wind field, temperature etc. in the upper atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere.

Staff Members 17 Staff Members they are data management, geophysics or computing professionals.

WDC for Geophysics, Beijing GNSS ionospheric monitoring network Mohe observatory Data node of Meridian project Beijing observatory Data center of STERN Wuhan observatory National Science & Technology Infrastructure of China Sanya observatory Mirror site of madrigal database Arctic, Antarctic Mirror site of DIDBase/Driftbase GNSS network There are about 60 sites. These are cooperated with other institutes and universities. We owned four permanent Observatories. We also have multiple instruments in Arctic, Antarctic and Shaoyang. Solar-Terrestrial Environment Research Network (STERN), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Observation Chain of IGGCAS Data Center in IGGCAS Four stations in a chain along 120°E meridian Beijing Station (40.3ºN , 116.2ºE ) Mohe Station (53.5ºN 122.3ºE) 120 degree east longitude Zhongshan Station in Antarctic area. Yellow River Station in Arctic. Sanya Station (18.3ºN 109.6ºE) Wuhan Station (31.0ºN,114.5ºE) Zhongshan Station (69.4ºS 76.4ºE ) Yellow River Station (78.9ºN 11.9ºE )

Observation Instruments Magnetometer ( 4 x 6+6=30 set ) Meteor Radar ( 4 set ) Ionosonde ( 4+1 set ) GPS TEC and Scintillation ( 7 set ) VHF Radar ( 1 set ) GNSS ionospheric monitor( 20 set ) Incoherent Scatter Radar (incoming)

Seismic Array The Seismic Array Observation System is for array seismological experiments to collect seismic data of earthquakes and man-made sources. Seismic data processing system with international standard and data sharing policy are established correspondingly. For the real-time data, we

Historical ionospheric data Different record materials Manually created records (~10years) Photographic film records (~50years) Digitalized records (~20years) For the historical data, I want to take the Historical ionospheric data as an instance. The manually created records are one paper per hour. For the Photographic film records, we get one record every 15 minutes.

Global cooperation data Madrigal database (global upper atmospheric science database by MIT Haystack Observatory) GIRO (Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory) database INTERMAGNET … 三种数据来源:每秒钟直接产生、转换历史、国际合作 WDC for Geophysics, Beijing hosts the mirror sites of Madrigal Database (http://madrigal.iggcas.ac.cn/) and DIDBase (http://www.epp.ac.cn/DIDBase.asp). The Madrigal Database is an upper atmospheric science database used by groups throughout the world and it is developed by the MIT Haystack Observatory. The DIDBase is created by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. It provides accurate specification of the electron density in the Earth's ionosphere at more than 60 locations in the world. GIRO data are opened for public access via DIDBase and DriftBase Web Portals The Beijing Ming Tombs station, which is owned by WDC for Geophysics, Beijing, is a standard permanent geomagnetic observation station and a member of International Real-time Magnetic Observatory Network ( Intermagnet ) .
