Today’s Agenda Review the Balanced Math Classroom Problem Solving/Problem of the Day Hands-on Activities/Manipulatives

What Should a Balanced Math Classroom Look Like? Calendar Math Problem of the Day Shared Math Lesson Independent Practice Guided Math Lesson / Math Task Center(s)

Critical Areas for Math Focus Kindergarten - page 9 First Grade – page 13 Second Grade - page 17

Problem of the Day CCSS Standards based Close Reading of a Word Problem Modeling the process of how to solve a word problem/picking out key words –Utilizing the Problem Solving Chart Solving the word problem - utilize Think Alouds, manipulatives (Math Tool Boxes) Monitor/Enhance the engagement of students (white boards, problem solving folders, turn and talks, partner/group work)

Some friends were playing outside together on a summer day Some friends were playing outside together on a summer day. Two of the friends had to go home to eat lunch. Now, there are six friends playing. How many friends were outside playing together before lunch time? What is my story about? What happened first? What happened next? Were there more (or fewer) friends at the beginning of the story or at the end of the story? How did you figure that out? How can we show/represent this? Can we act out the story? How many friends were there at the beginning of the story? How many friends were taken away? How many friends were left at the end of the story? How do you know? Hand-out as a reminder

Word Problem Show Process (Write steps you used to solve) Solution (Solving with strategies) Ending with the solution in a complete sentence

Straight from the CCSS….. Common Addition and Subtraction Situations Page 88 – CCSS (Handout)

Focusing on Number Sense with Problem Solving Added the charts from learningjolt site to go over the %s and fluency

CRA **Should be using this with all hands-on/problem solving activities C – Concrete (use manipulatives) R – Representational (drawing pictures) A – Abstract (creating number sentences) Elaborated on the hand-out

Now…time for FUN!!!! Fact Families to 10 Sums of 10 - Memory Both tasks were copied for a hand-out
