Carbon Cutting Challenge

5th Place in the 2010 People&Planet Green League. Sustainability Policy approved May 2009. Carbon Management Plan created April 2009 - under review. 2007/2008 carbon footprint of approximately 27,500 tonnes of CO2 – around two thirds through energy use. Signed up to the 10:10 campaign. Future targets: 15% reduction by 2012 and 85% by 2050.

Energy On-site 3MW CHP plant, launched October 2009 – projected 20% reduction in emissions from energy use. £250,000 Salix funding on the following energy efficiency projects: Installation of energy efficient lighting in library building Upgrade of boilers on campus Insulation and repair of pipe work Installation of efficient ventilation drivers in library building.

Waste Mini recycling centres launched October 2009 with a target to increase recycling/reduce waste to landfill by 20% during 2009/10. Textile recycling banks, battery recycling facilities and book recycling all available on campus. Water Campus lake relined in March 2010 to stop leakage – projected reduction in water use of around 2%. Installation of water-efficient urinals on campus.

Transport Our Vice-Chancellor uses an electric Smart car and Aston is involved in the CABLED electric car trial. Reduction of stationery deliveries from daily to twice weekly. Discounted public transport tickets available for staff. Promotion of cycling/walking: bike sales, support of National Bike Week, installation of 100 new cycle spaces on campus, new showering and changing facilities.

Behaviour change Student Switch Off campaign in halls of residence has shown approximate savings of 12%. Aston Go Green Awards, rewarding staff and departments who act sustainably launched January 2010. 14 teams signed up – average score of 70%. Go Green Awards lunch held May 2010 to celebrate the winners.
