In-Class Activity (Design-2) Active Learning activity performed Problem solving methodology using Think-Pair-Share. Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity Think (10 Mins): Question was given to the students and they were allowed to solve it in given time frame. Q. Two mild steel rods 40 mm diameter are to be connected by a cotter joint. The thickness of the cotter is 12 mm. Calculate the dimensions of the joint, if the maximum permissible stresses are: 46 MPa in tension ; 35 MPa in shear and 70 MPa in crushing. Calculate Diameter of spigot, Outside diameter of socket, Width of cotter and diameter of socket collar. Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity Pair (10 + 2 Mins): Now after seeing the difficulties faced by the students for solving the problem, they were allowed to discuss in the group and come to a conclusion where it all went wrong by them and to improve the solving methodology in minimum time. Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity Share (5 Mins): Now two pairs were engaged in discussion to come to a conclusion for the problem with smart way of solving it in minimum time frame which could be helpful in solving major problems at later stages of examination. Conclusion was explained with reference with all peers and instructor (me). In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity - Analysis Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity – Analysis Challenges faced: Six students didn’t brought calculator. Few students faced difficulty in solving basic mathematical quadratic equation. Students were not ready for the surprise activity. Few students didn’t practice at home because of which many couldn’t complete the problem in time. Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) TPS Activity – Analysis Conclusions: Students learnt: Where they are lacking in problem solving. Smart techniques in calculator to solve the problem in less time. Their mistake from their peers/group members. Why problem solving methodology is important. Students were made aware of how to use calculator effectively. Discussion wasn’t noisy and could conclude the problem easily even though many concluded beyond time frame. Department of Mechanical Engineering, FOT, RK University <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nd/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br /><span xmlns:dct="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" property="dct:title">Work</span> by <span xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" property="cc:attributionName">Nitin Jayakumar</span> is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License</a>.

In-Class Activity (Design-2) Why above activity is an Active Learning Strategy? Because subject being important in terms of problem solving methodology & designing a machine part/sub-part as per procedural techniques, student will learn and understand with their mistakes and their peer’s solving methods rather than listening in class or being passive in class. Higher order thinking by the students is achieved. Feedback is provided instructor at the end of the activity.
