Questions about hair. What causes an ingrown hair? Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled around and grown back into your skin instead of rising up from it. Sometimes dead skin can clog up a hair follicle. That forces the hair inside it to grow sideways under the skin, rather than upward and outward.

What causes hair to grey? Intrinsic factors: * Genetic defects * Hormones * Age Extrinsic factors: * Climate * Pollutants * Toxins * Chemical exposure

What causes a cowlick -The hair on your head needs to go in three directions – some needs to go forward, some backwards, and some to the sides. -A cowlick's spiral pattern is likely caused because hair gets confused about whether it needs to go forward, backward, or to the side, and some hairs get caught in between creating that characteristic whorl. -They form early in life -- in utero -- and once you have a cowlick, you're stuck with it unless you lose your hair. Both men and women are equally affected by them, although it doesn't seem that way since they are more noticeable in guys because they typically have shorter hair.

Nails Cuticle/Eponychium-seals the matrix to the nail plate preventing infection Nail Root- area of cell reproduction, located under the skin Nail Plate- protects sensitive end of finger, allows you to grasp and pluck small objects Nail Bed- contains the receptors that sense touch Lanunla- made of keratinized cells that push out from the nail root 1 5 3 4 2

Epidermis Both Nail Thin layer of keratinized cells Thick layer of keratinized cells Made of stratified squamous tissue Subject to infection and injury Affected by nutrition

Function of nails Protection Picking up objects- sensitive Scratching

Fun Fact A fingernail grows 4x faster than a toenail.
