New Grading Policy

9th Grade Fact  The transition to high school has become more important because of the high rate of course failures and dropout rates in the 9th grade. The single most predictive indicator of high school dropout is the student’s academic standing by the end of 9th grade. http://www.educationpartnerships.org/

Your child still needs your academic support in high school

1) Organization and planning: On These Things: 1) Organization and planning: Do they use their binder to keep track of work and notes Do they use an agenda book to keep track of important due dates for assignments Grades: check Ed-line once a week. Check your child’s attendance: absences and lateness.

Edline Edline is an online tool used upload materials such as upcoming tests, projects, homework, class expectations, and progress reports. The website mainly helps parents see if students have missed any homework. Parents or students can e-mail teachers if any kind of help is needed. Edline is not in real time, it take up to 24 hrs. for grades to be seen updated in Edline. Kimberly C. Moore A.P. U.S. History & N.S.L. Kimberly_C_moore@mcpsmd.org

Ways to Prepare for a Test 1. Do some practice problems 2. Go over old homework and work on answers you do not know 3. Make flashcards and study key terms and concepts 4. Reread textbook and notes 5. Parent – ask your child on whether they are seeking help for answers they do not know.

How my student gets help during school Each teacher has a schedule that they offer to assist students toward completing work. Before school (By appointment) SHOWtime (Tuesday and Thursday) Lunch (Every day) After school (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) *There is a Late Activity bus. National Honor Society offers Tutoring to all students interested. Writing Center, Lab 1126 (Offered: every day at lunch, every Tuesday and Thursday at SHOWtime (by sign-ups), and by appointment with the English Comp Assistants) George B. Thomas School – Saturdays at GHS http://saturdayschool.org/ MCPS – offers the Homework Help Line. Twitter - @AskHHL, 301-279-3234

(Study Habits Of Winners) SHOWTime (Study Habits Of Winners)

SHOWTime occurs every Tuesdays and Thursdays at the end of 4th period SHOWTime allows students to .. Get help from teachers (make-up assignments, take/retake quizzes and tests, work on projects, enrichment activities…) Attend seminars and workshops Work on projects in the media center Get a start on homework Catch up on reading

Required Quarterly Assessments RQAs replace two-hour end of semester final exams in core courses. RQAs will be given quarterly in each course that used to have a districtwide exam. RQAs will be content-specific and vary in format, to include cumulative tests, projects, or other common tasks similar to what is already included in the curriculum.
