Lesson Starter In your jotters, draw and label a plant cell Describe the function of the cell membrane Describe the function of the nucleus

LESSON 4- How to make a microscope slide Cells Alive LESSON 4- How to make a microscope slide

Today we are going to.. Prepare and look at ELODEA slides Discuss the parts of the green plant cell

Elodea Elodea is a type of pondweed- they are green in colour and so we do not need to use a stain

Preparing slides Collect a slide, cover slip and leaf of pondweed Put the leaf on the slide with a drop of water and lower the cover slip on top Set up your microscope Examine the leaf under the microscope Draw what you see on page 10

What did the cells look like?

An extra organelle Green plants contain CHLOROPLASTS which contain a green pigment called CHLOROPHYLL

Plants.. Plants can make their own food through a process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS The chlorophyll traps light from the sun and uses it to make food

The (green) plant cell

The (green) plant cell Complete the table on page 11 by filling in the function for each of the organelles

Think.. Pair.. Share Both onions and pondweed are types of plants.. Why do you think pondweed has chlorophyll and onions don’t?
