Why is this an important skill? In our last health lesson, we practiced how to make good decisions (IBEAR) and solve problems in healthy ways. Why is this an important skill?

We are more likely to stay happy and healthy when we make good decisions. Outcome is: --feel good about ourselves ---have positive relationships -----avoid trouble

Disagreements with other people are a type of problem we can solve. Raise your hand if you’ve ever disagreed with someone. Nod your head if you’ve ever disagreed with someone so much that you argued about it.

Today we will talk about some basic skills for resolving conflicts. you can learn to handle many disagreements or conflicts yourself so you can keep your friends and have more fun together. Today we will talk about some basic skills for resolving conflicts.

There are several skills we have discussed in some of our earlier health lessons that will helps us! Let’s review some of those skills and see how they might help us resolve conflicts.

What are the 3 steps for ICE? Conflict can bring up strong feelings. This is natural. In one of our health lessons, we learned about the ICE steps for managing strong feelings. What are the 3 steps for ICE?

Applying ICE when feelings are strong: I- identify how you are feeling (angry, stomachache etc) List on YOUR paper how you feel when you are having a strong emotion! C - Calm down (3 deep breaths, walk away, count to 10 etc) List on your paper ways YOU can calm down E-Explain how you feel I felt___________________when you__________. Please __________________.

“I statements” It can be helpful when you use I- statements to talk with the person about these three things: 1. How you feel about the situation. 2. What the person did that upset you. 3. What you want him or her to do instead.

What are some examples of assertive body language? We’ve also talked about using assertive body language when we speak to show we respect ourselves and others. What are some examples of assertive body language? Write them on your paper I will call on people to share

When you disagree with someone, it is also important to listen with respect, too. What are some things you can do to show you are listening well? Write them on your paper I will call on people to share

What are the four qualities of a good decision? Fill in the blanks Lastly, resolving conflicts involves making a good choice from a list of possible solutions. You need to know if your decision is a good one. What are the four qualities of a good decision? Fill in the blanks

Often, using the skills we just discussed will help resolve a conflict. We are going to combine many of those skills into a list of conflict resolution skills.

Let’s get some practice with the steps of conflict resolution. We will complete side 1 together
