Here are some basic tips when writing a multiple paragraph essay. Think of your essay as a math formula or steps that need to be taken to get to the finish line. All multiple paragraph essays have the following:
Multiple Paragraph Essay Formula An introduction Body paragraphs (supports) A conclusion
The introduction The introduction should be the place to start presenting your topic. Begins with a LEAD sentence that grabs the reader’s attention. (sometimes called the hook) It must also contain a thesis statement. A THESIS statement is one sentence that clearly tells the reader what your paper will be about, and it often has a point to prove. You should also list the points (supporting details) that you will talk about in the essay.
EACH Body paragraph should: Start with a topic sentence that introduces the supporting detail. Elaborate on this detail by giving examples, explanations, statistics, etc. You should try to have at least 2 elaborations. Your body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence.
Each Body paragraph will contain: Topic Sentence Elaboration Twice Concluding Sentence Repeat this formula for all of the supporting detail paragraphs
Conclusion Paragraph The conclusion is the place to sum up your essay and re-state your thesis statement in different words. Give a final thought about the topic New information does not belong in the conclusion.
