Unit 3 – Post-colonialism LT: I will know the role of government, so that I can…

Warm Up – 2nd period Using the examples on your desk, choose two and explain why each is either more socialist, capitalist, or a combination of the two.

Warm-up What is one thing the government does?

Government To Govern – to rule, guide, or exercise influence over Government - the form or system of rule by which a state, c ommunity, etc., is governed through laws and policies

Dictatorship A government where one person has absolute authority. Ex. In North Korea, Kim Jong Un has almost complete control over his citizens, the economy, and laws in the country.

democracy A government by the whole population or all the members of a state, typically through voting and electing representatives. Ex. In ancient Greece, all the land- owners could vote on new laws, elected officials, and so on.

Dictatorship to democracy In the 1800s, the British parliament (a group of government officials) creates laws for the people of Sudan. The people of Tunisia now elect representatives to make laws for them. In South Africa in the 1970s, only people of white skin can elect representatives and government officials. In the 1700s, the King of France made laws for Algeria.

In ancient Egypt, government revolved heavily around a single figure, the Pharaoh, who the people believed to be a living god. This status basically granted the pharaoh (who was, in almost all cases, a man) virtually limitless power and control over his subjects.

Mohamed Morsi’s won the Egyptian election for president on June 24th, 2012. As president, Morsi granted himself unlimited powers and the power to create laws without oversight or review of his acts, claiming that he would protect the nation from the previous power structure, which he called "remnants of the old regime“.

Politics in the Central African Republic formally take place in a framework of a semi-presidential republic. In this system, the President is the head of state, with a Prime Minister as head of government. Executive power (ability to enforce laws and policy) is exercised by the government. Legislative power (ability to create laws and policy) is controlled in both the government and parliament. Changes in government have occurred in recent years by three methods: violence, negotiations, and elections. A new constitution was approved by voters in a referendum held on 5 December 2004. The government was rated 'Partly Free' from 1991 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2013.[56]

Nelson Mandela was elected president of South African on May 10, 1994 Nelson Mandela was elected president of South African on May 10, 1994. He presided over the transition from minority rule and apartheid, winning international respect for his advocacy of national and international reconciliation. The 1996 constitution limited the president to two consecutive five-year terms. Mandela did not attempt to have the document amended to remove the two-term limit; indeed, he had only intended to serve one term. Mandela left office on 14 June 1999.

Exit Ticket What kind of a government do we have in the United States? How do you know? Give examples.
