In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many Americans held biased, or prejudice views. Who can recall from last classes lesson what some of these prejudiced views might be? (Turn and talk) Discrimination against -Catholics- APA- not allowed to get certain jobs -Jews -Asians- Unable to buy land in California, Chinese exclusion act prevented Chinese from coming to the U.S.

This included many progressive reformers, Reformers often came from the middle and upper classes. They did not question their right to make decisions for all society, they saw themselves as moral leaders who worked to improve the lives of the less fortunate. Infer why the progressives achieved only mixed results with their reforms during this period.

Main Idea Supporting Details- The reforms they supported however, discriminated against one group, as they tried to help another. Supporting Details- 1. Trade unions often did not allow African Americans, women, or immigrants to join. 2. The unions argued that skilled laborers could obtain better working conditions if they did not demand improved conditions for all workers. 3. Minorities were banned from joining many progressive organizations

Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “Struggle for Equality” and answer the following comprehension questions: 1. Describe the changes that Booker T. Washington believed would help African Americans, AND what actions did he take to make this happen? 2. Interpret what W.E.B. Du Bois believed would help African Americans. State at least 2 details.
