criminology in Victorian Literature

Task 1: What do you think Dracula looks like?

Police Composite Sketch of Bram Stoker’s Dracula Long white moustache. Face: a very strong, aquiline, -thin nose, high bridge. Domed forehead. His eyebrows were very massive, almost meeting over the nose. The mouth, was fixed and rather cruel-looking. For the rest, his ears were pale, and at the tops extremely pointed. The chin was broad and strong.

Bela Lugosi- Tod Browning’s Dracula (1931) “Patent leather shoes and patent leather hair”

Victorian Monsters Victorian Era- Dynamic Darwinian nightmare Devolution Reverse Colonisation

Phrenology and Physiognomy Victorian Pseudoscience Cesare Lombroso: Father of Criminology “Criminality is an atavistic phenomenon”

Celebrity profile Cheek bones: Arnold’s protruding cheek bones show that he has loads of courage. Forehead: His wide forehead shows that he is a very intelligent person Chin: Arnold’s  big chin shows that he has the tendency to take physical risks and high physical endurance. Verdict: Action Hero!

Task 2: In pairs, use your powers of deduction to develop a short (3-4 sentences) criminal profile based on your interpretation of a literary character’s physical features… The safety of millions of imaginary literary characters depends on your answer, good luck!
