Principles of Government Explain the origin of the state Describe the philosophy of John Locke and how it had an impact on the Declaration of Independence Summarize how government enables a society to protect the peace and carry out its politics. Explain the goals of the Federal Government and the Preamble

What would your life be like without government? Who would protect you? Who would provide for education? Who would pave streets? Who would punish criminals? Who would protect property owners? Most people don’t know what all the government does, but you are about to find out.

Public policies are all of the things a government decides to do. Government is the institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies. Public policies are all of the things a government decides to do. Legislative Power is the power to make law and to frame public policies. executive – power to execute, enforce, and administer law judicial – power to interpret laws, to determine their meaning, and to settle disputes that arise within society. Constitution is the body of fundamental laws setting out the principles, structures, and processes of gov. Dictatorship is a person or a small group of people that have ultimate responsibilities for the exercise of these powers.

Four Characteristics of a State Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme authority rests with the people. Direct democracy – people make governmental policies and laws.
