This began the long history of Spanish imperialism in Latin America. Spanish missionaries brought the Catholic faith, building resembled Spanish architecture, and the Spanish language was taught to the natives. Spain gained complete control of the South American mainland with the exception of Brazil, which was controlled by the Portuguese.
