Let’s learn about the parts of the sewing machine. This presentation will show you pictures of each part and the name of the part, followed by a definition of the part’s function. You’ll also learn how to thread a machine.

This is a picture of a basic sewing machine.

1. Reverse Lever

The Reverse Lever The reverse lever allows you to stitch in reverse. We use reverse stitches to make our stitches secure at the beginning and end of seams.

2. Stitch Selector

The Stitch Selector The stitch selector lets you choose what kind of stitch you will be making, such as straight stitches or an embroidery stitch or zig-zag.

3. Stitch Length

The Stitch Length The stitch length determines the length of the stitch.

4. Bobbin Winder

The Bobbin Winder The bobbin winder winds the thread from the spool onto the bobbin.

5. Spool Pin

The Spool Pin The spool pin holds the spool of thread. We use a special white adaptor to keep the thread from flying off while the machine is in use.

6. Feed Dogs

The Feed Dogs The feed dogs are the “teeth-like” parts on the plate that works with the presser foot to pull your fabric through the machine towards the back.

7. Slide Plate

The Slide Plate The slide plate is a clear plastic cover that covers the bobbin case to keep dust and dirt out of the moving parts area of the bobbin case.

8. Hand wheel

The Hand Wheel The hand wheel raises and lowers the needle. You must always pull the hand wheel towards yourself to prevent the threads from tangling or breaking.

10. Power Switch

The Power Switch The power switch turns the power on the sewing machine on or off. On some sewing machines, the power switch also turns on/off the light over the sewing area.

11. Presser foot

The Presser Foot The presser foot puts pressure on the fabric and holds the fabric against the feed dogs so the feed dogs can pull your fabric through the machine.

The Presser Foot Lifter The presser foot lifter gently lifts the presser foot up and lowers it against the feed dogs. Note: the presser foot must be lowered before you begin to sew; or fabric will not move through the machine!

13. Foot Pedal

The Foot Pedal The foot pedal operates the sewing machine. The foot pedal also controls the speed of the sewing machine and how fast it sews. The more pressure you put on the foot pedal, the faster the machine will sew. SLOW DOWN!!!!

The Take-Up Lever The take-up lever pulls the thread back up after each stitch, so that the stitches will lay evenly into the fabric.

Extension Table The extension table usually makes the table of the sewing machine bigger (ours does not). Some machines, like ours, have a sleeve that stores some accessories (things) in it.

Bobbin Housing The bobbin housing is where the bobbin case goes.

How to thread a machine Now, I will show you how to thread a machine.

1. Put the spool in place.

2. Draw the thread around the thread guide.

3. Draw the thread down through channel A.

4. Pull the thread around to the left at the bottom.

5. Pull the thread back up through channel B.

6. Slip the thread through the take-up lever as shown.

7. Pull the thread back down through channel B.

8. Slip the thread into the needle bar thread guide.

9. Thread the needle eye from the front to back.

10. Place the bobbin into the bobbin case. ***Make sure the thread comes over the top of the bobbin and to the left. Bobbin case Bobbin

11. Pull the thread into the bobbin case slit.

12. Snap the bobbin case into the bobbin housing.

13. Use the handwheel and pull it towards you to move the needle down.

14. Holding the thread, pull the handwheel towards you so the needle comes back up.

15. You will see the bobbin thread come up.

16. Pull both threads to the back and under the presser foot.
