Reducing the need for time-consuming experiments Phase Transformations and Complex Properties Group http://www.msm.cam.ac.uk/phase-trans/ Steam turbines used in the generation of electricity have design lives in excess of 25 years. It is necessary therefore to engage in long-term testing when new alloys are invented. . We have demonstrated using the mathematical modelling that in steam turbine conditions, the temperature dependence of the hot tensile-strength is essentially identical to that of creep deformation. Therefore, a short-term creep test combined with quick hot-strength data may be used to extrapolate the creep data to long times. . hot tensile-strength creep strength
