Presentation transcript:

How to Succeed in Today’s Job Market From NACE-Between 2002-2012 there will be more than 14 million job openings filled by workers who have a bachelor’s or higher degree and are entering the workplace for the first time. Reason-Baby-boomers are retiring.

Steps to Job-Search Success Start early-6 mo. To 1 year in advance Start with the Career Center (assesses your skills, resume help, interview prep, job leads, etc.) Research industries, jobs and employers-see if the company is right for you Network-Call on anyone who can help

Know What Skills Employers Are Looking For Communication Honesty/Integrity Interpersonal Strong Work Ethic Teamwork Leadership Analytical Motivation/Initiative Flexibility Adaptability Computer Detail-oriented

What Else are Employers Looking For? (no order) Gpa Related experience Consistency and upward mobility (held job for a couple of years) Specific qualities (to train easily-teamwork, good communication skills) Volunteer experience Out-of-the-ordinary experience (study abroad, etc.)

Show The Employer You Are The Best Candidate Make your resume as good as it can be Research the employer and connect your skills to their needs Demonstrate your soft skills (communication, interpersonal, etc.) Be prepared for your interview (be on time, be honest, be realistic, be open-minded, be professional, etc.)

Is That Employer Right For You? Research, research, research Is the salary right? Do the benefits outweigh the salary? Does the companies career ladder meet your goals? Look at where the companies opportunities are. Is it somewhere you want to be? Do they place an emphasis on professional development?

Is This Worth The Time? It is only your career for the rest of your life!
