WHY WALK or BIKE? Over the past 40 years, rates of obesity have soared among children of all ages in the United States, and approximately 25 million children and adolescents—more than 33%—are now overweight or obese or at risk of becoming so. Kids are less active today, and 23% of children get no free time physical activity at all. The prevalence of obesity is so great that today’s generation of children may be the first in over 200 years to live less healthy and have a shorter lifespan than their parents. “Researchers have been examining the association between physical activity and academic achievement for almost 50 years…[research] consistently showed that physical activity had a significant positive association with students' cognitive functioning.” Learn More… http://www.equitycampaign.org/i/a/document/12557_EquityMattersVol6_Web03082010.pdf http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/josh.12309/abstract http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/health_and_academics/pdf/health-academic-achievement.pdf

Eight schools have implemented a fall and spring, weekly BSW (start date in parentheses): Northrop (Sept, 2012), Loring (Sept, 2013), Lyndale (Sept, 2013), Keewaydin (March, 2014), Wenonah (March, 2014), Green Central (Sept, 2014), Pratt (March, 2015), and Seward (April, 2015). 157 staff from these eight schools took the short, anonymous survey staff to compare staff observations of students on BSW days to research about the positive impact of walking and biking to school. Staff are overwhelming positive about the bus stop and walk and its impact on children and the school day.

On the BSW day, children arrive more alert and ready to learn.
