Which words do you relate with? Caring – “You are important to me” Collaborative- “We can do it together” Confrontational – “Make me” Defensive – “Why is it MY fault all the time?” Determined – “Nothing can stop me” Fearful – “I’m worried about getting it all done” Insecure – “Not sure what I should say” Optimistic – “It’s all going to work out” Pessimistic – “Nothing ever works out right”

BELIEFS CAN INFLUENCE ATTITUDE Our expectations and perceptions have a great deal to do with our attitudes. These expectations may be totally false, but they will determine our attitudes. Our attitudes cannot stop our feelings, but they can keep our feelings from stopping us! Expectations /perceptions

Your attitude affects your job: How does a positive attitude effect your co-workers? Your boss? How does a negative attitude effect coworkers or your boss?

How to change your Attitude REVIEW your actions: ID problem feelings RESOLVE to change: ID problem behavior REFRAME your thinking towards events: Make a commitment to right thinking REENTER situations with a different mind set REPEAT an action to realize an attitude: Then…… RENEWAL occurs when more negative attitudes are weeded out and replaced by positive ones Reference these for your reflections

Your attitude toward change or your own predisposition to avoid it can hinder to your own personal success as a leader.

A bad attitude and poor communication skills can lead to:

Conflict is when two or more people want different things.

Conflict Styles • Avoiding--Issue and relationship both are insignificant. • Accommodating--Relationship is more important than the issue. • Forcing--The issue is more important than the relationship. • Compromising--Cooperation is important (give a little, get a little). • Collaborating--Relationship and issue are both important (takes more time).
