DERMATOPHYTOSIS IN DOGS SYN.: RINGWORM

INTRODUCTION Fungal infection of the skin , hair or nail cause by specie of microsporum, Trichophyton or Epidermophyton . Disease is self limiting in most healthy Animals.

AETIOLOGY Microsporum canis ( major cause ) 64.9% Trichophyton mentagrophytes (mouse /vole) 24.2% Trichophyton erimacei (hedgehog ) 4.4% Microsporum persicolor (Mouse/vole ) 3.9% Trichophyton verrucosem (cattle) 2.6% Trichophyton terrestre ( soil ) 2.6% Microsporum gypsum 2.6%

TRANSMISSION Direct contact with infected animal Indirect : formites ( combs & brushes ) Desquamated material free in the environment. Spores may remain viable for more than a year.

CLINICAL SIGNS Most common finding is one or more patches of alopecia with an erythromatous border and scaling . In long – haired dogs e.g Yorkshire terriers generalized Seborrhoeic dermatitis with only partial hair loss. Multiple circular , fairly thick crust adhere to the base

CLINICAL SIGNS contd Papules and pustules with alopecia or scaling Lesions mostly around the head, neck, base of tail & extreme ties. Some lesions presents as acutely inflamed skin oozing pus Nail may be affected ( onychomycosis ) leading to deformity and Shedding. Hyperpigmentation in chronic cases

DIAGNOSIS Clinical signs & history Wood lamp examination Microscopic examination Culture ( SDA)

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS Demodicosis

TREATMENT Griseofulvin Contraindicated in pregnancy (tetatogenic especialy early pregnancy).

ADJUNCT THERAPY Enilconazole 0.2% qid Ketoconazole 5 -10ing / kg 0d or bid Side effect: vomiting , pruritus & hepatotoxicity)
