Adriana Carter, Julian Gatch, Rachel Smith Tragedy and Catharsis Adriana Carter, Julian Gatch, Rachel Smith noice lil title pg u got here

Tragedy Tragedy should show the audience what it is trying to say rather than narrate Arouses the feeling of catharsis in the audience Relatable to the audience Every tragedy has the six parts: Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought Spectacle, Melody

Mimesis It means “Imitation of action” according to Aristotle It’s used to make literature or art closer to life, or more realistic It is important not to make it too close to life

Serious Action A serious action is thoughtful in character/manner, complete (beginning, middle, and end) Sophisticated diction is used, but it’s not narrative Includes catharsis Tragedy is a type of this

Law of Probability or Necessity in Oedipus Rex How probable or necessary a character’s reaction is Oedipus’ reaction to Jocasta’s death is probable Jocasta’s suicide is expected through textual clues/hints

History vs. Tragedy History: Simply tells what has happened Specific Not as relevant Could be due to accident/coincidence Tragedy: More philosophical than history and relatable Dramatizes what may happen Based in universal order Cause-and-effect chain that clearly states what may happen because of the way the world operates Arouses catharsis

Structure of Oedipus Rex It has a beginning, middle, and end Uses cause and effect structure Based around plot, not the characters

Catharsis In catharsis, the audience feels pity and fear for the character (Ex: Oedipus Rex) Creates a balance of emotions through the play When you think about the details incorporated in the work it can give you a kind of pleasure
