Dane Boswell Aerospace trainer in CFRP Dane.v.boswell@bruinmail.com Training Module for the Manufacturing of CFRP and Composite Structures. Dane Boswell Aerospace trainer in CFRP Dane.v.boswell@bruinmail.com
Introduction This presentation is designed to teach you about composites. How composite is manufactured. Why do we use composites over metals? Finally, the drilling and manufacturing process guides for new hires out on the shop floor.
What is Composite or CFRP. In Aerospace composites are generally referred to as: CFRP or Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic.
There are many different layers. You can have as many as you want
Manufacturing Rotate 45 Degrees for each ply. By doing this, the structural integrity of this CFRP is immensely increased!
CFRP Cross section lay-up = neat looking design! New machines that do the lay-up process now.
Why do we use Composite in place of metals? CFRP Why do we use Composite in place of metals? Less Money! Stronger! It’s completely fire proof Lighter It can be repaired!
Drilling Step 1! Get a backing plate! Aim for ZERO damage!
Drilling What’s the difference between a delaminated part and a break out? Fiber Breakout! This is delamination
Drilling Step 2! Choosing a Drill Bit Dreamer Reamer
Drilling What NOT to use! This is a standard twist drill bit. Fluke
Understanding the Coating on drill bits
Step 3 Choose your drill bit. Get a backing plate, if not already provided. Speed and feed. Peck! Use lube if you have too. Don’t drill backwards
Step 4 Deburring!
Deburring
Step 5. Inspection
Let’s Refresh! What is composite? How is it manufactured? Why do we use Composite? Drilling method? Inspect your part before you drill it. Backing plate. Choose your drill bit Speed and Feed Peck Don’t drill backwards Deburr Inspection
