ALLIES The U.S., Great Britain, France, & Russia These were the Allied Powers who fought the Central Powers in World War I.

WAR BONDS America bought war bonds to support the troops. The $ went to pay for supplies etc. for troops.

CENTRAL POWERS Austria-Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, & Bulgaria These were the Central Powers who fought the Allied Powers in World War I.

DRAFT Many nations began a conscription, or draft to fill their militaries to fight in World War I.

ESPIONAGE ACT A law passed in 1917 that set heavy fines for anti-war activity and draft dodging. SPY vs. SPY

FRANZ FERDINAND Archduke Ferdinand The Austrian official who was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist and began a war between Austria & Serbia.

World War I was the first war that used chemical warfare. GAS WARFARE World War I was the first war that used chemical warfare.

HITLER, ADOLF Volunteered and fought for Germany in World War I gaining military experience and training that would help him lead a nation in World War II.

IMPERIALISM Many nations were competing for colonies. Germany had fewer colonies than Britain and France and felt it deserved more. This was one cause of World War I.

NATIONALISM FOR Europeans had strong feelings of pride, loyalty, and excitement toward their own countries. They wanted to prove their nations were the best. This was one more cause of World War I.

Ottoman Empire Ottoman Empire was founded in modern day Turkey during the 13th century. They joined the Central Powers

PROPAGANDA Articles, photographs, films etc. created to influence the actions and feelings of others.
