Criteria for Success… At the end of today’s lesson, we will begin to read the text Outcast United. Today, we will compare and contrast the experiences of the players of the Fugees and the Atlanta soccer teams. We will analyze the character traits associated with Luma the Fugees coach.

What is a refugee? refugee a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. In your own words, describe what you think a refugee is.

He is a refugee.

They are refugees.

Are they so different from me & you?

Outcast United The story of the Fugees and Luma Mufleh is a tale of tragedy, triumph, and acceptance for those that thought they would never belong. We recently read a text about the life you can save, Luma, embodied the challenge presented by Peter Singer, and took young boys and girls and built a community of love, trust, and faith in humanity. Luma and the Fugees are the pure essence of what our essential question embraces, how can we help our school, our community, and the world around us.

Who are the Fugees?

How did soccer change Luma and the Fugees lives?

Introduction Listen as I read the introduction to Outcast United. As you listen, think about the information you learned about the Fugees. think about how the opening scene of the soccer field was different for both soccer teams.

Outcast United Writing Prompt 1 Write a brief explanation, citing evidence from the videos and text, to explain why the Fugees reacted so differently from the native Atlanta students when the squadron plane flew by.

“Beautiful souls are shaped by ugly experiences.”

Exit Ticket – Written Text Response From the Introduction, what do we learn about Luma’s personality and character? To answer this question, make a list of character traits and discuss Luma based on this evidence. What words and or passages in the Introduction give evidence of her values and philosophy?
