Chapter 14.1 Biotic and Abiotic Factors of an Ecosystem
By Mrs. Piney-Perez.  Abiotic are non living things in an ecosystem.  Biotic are living things in an ecosystem.  Ecosystem is all the living and nonliving.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Abiotic vs. Biotic. Abiotic = nonliving Biotic = living.
ECOLOGY A FEW TERMS. BIOTIC FACTORS The things that are living, or that came from living things EXAMPLES: Plants Animals Bacteria Fungus (mushrooms, yeasts)
Ecology E 2.1 Abiotic Factors. Abiotic Factors  Living organisms depend on one another and their environment  Biotic – features of the environment that.

Living vs. Nonliving?

Nonliving is the opposite of living. Phot credit to Jennifer C. and phrawr respectively; creative commons license

Dead is also the opposite of living Phot credit to http://underclassrising.net/ and phrawr respectively; creative commons license

But nonliving and dead aren’t really the same thing. Phot credit to Jennifer C. and to http://underclassrising.net/ respectively; creative commons license

Instead we use the terms Abiotic Biotic The root “bio” means life The prefix “a” means without or not Together, abiotic means “not living” or “without life” Think of abiotic things (factors) as things that were never alive The root “bio” means life Biotic means having to do with life or living things. Think of biotic things (factors) as things that are living or came from living things including dead things.

What things can you think of that are . . . . abiotic? biotic? ? ?

What things can you think of that are . . . . abiotic? biotic? Rocks Dirt The sun The atmosphere Weather Most chemicals pH Temperature Plants Animals Fungi Bacteria Protists Bio-chemicals DNA Proteins, etc.
